Lee Kump was named the seventeenth dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, pending approval of the Penn State Board of Trustees on July 21. Kump will serve as interim dean from June 1 to July 20.
For more than a century, Penn State’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences has been a beacon of intellectual leadership on issues of utmost importance to the welfare of the Commonwealth and the nation. Our college is creating tomorrow's leaders in earth, energy, and material sciences and engineering and plays an important role in preparing a diverse and talented workforce, as well as providing new knowledge that will drive the economic vitality of the state and the nation.
Our college is at the forefront of both innovative teaching and path-breaking research focused on meeting the needs of global society. We empower our students to discover their own abilities, while providing them with the latest scientific knowledge of change in the global environment and society—and teach them how best to manage these changes. Through our nearly 60 undergraduate, graduate and professional programs, we have tremendous breadth and depth in our academics.
As a student, you benefited from the experience and success of those who graduated before you. As a graduate of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) you have the insight, perspective, and experience to become a critical component of the EMS network through the Penn State Alumni Association and our Office of Development and Alumni Relations. Our alumni volunteer their time to support the college in many ways such as those listed below.

The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Penn State boasts a storied history, one that started in 1859 with the University’s first earth sciences courses and stretches today to the borders of the Commonwealth and beyond.
